Fearless Predictions - Indianapolis

Remember last Monday, when we said that the People's Pitstop's results at Indianapolis Motor Speedway were better than a brick to the head? Well, the predictions for top 10 finishers for that race felt exactly like a brick to the head. We went 0 for 4 last week, lowering our season record to 22-50. Therefore, all NASCAR fans are advised to take this week's forecasts for Pocono Raceway with at least a grain of salt.
One from the front: Our predictions need all the help they can get, so we're going all the way to the front with Joey Logano, whose list of "youngest NASCAR Sprint Cup driver ever to" achievements now includes being the youngest ever to win the Pocono pole. This is the type of track where you can start at the front and stay there, especially if Mother Nature decides to end things early.
One from the back: Again, the pickings are slim in the back 10. We'll go with Landon Cassill, who starts 36th and at least spent some time in the top five last week at Indianapolis. Let's just hope he can keep his car (and Kasey Kahne's) on the track this week.
Two from the middleRyan Newman starts 12th in this race and, despite his eighth-place spot in driver points, will need to keep running well to make the Chase. Fortunately, "running well" is something Newman does quite well at Pocono; he has eight top 10 finishes here, including a victory in 2003.
But if you don't want to go that far back in time for a good trend, you can simply look to Jimmie Johnson, who starts in 18th place this week. He had finished in the top 10 the last three times NASCAR has taken its act here. Oh, and for those of you who insist on taking a long-term view, he won both Pocono races back in 2004.
Enjoy the race, everybody. We'll be back with the results.

Better Than a Brick to the Head

Many people weren't happy that Sunday's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway turned into a contest of MPG instead of MPH, but the way we see it, things could have gone a lot worse.
The People's Pitstop did manage to score 256 points at this weekend's NASCAR race, including the 18 we pocketed for having the three top qualifiers. Our season total of 5,410 is good enough to keep us in second place in the 9beersfantasysportstavern league, though Jeff Gordon Dupont 24's lead has grown to 105 points.
Here are all the gasoline-infused details.
Jimmie Johnson: Started 3rd, finished 19th, 1 lap led and 67 fantasy points. Johnson just hasn't been his usual self this season. Maybe part of him is still freaked out by a certain shower visitor. (Here's a hint: If you're going to talk to Mr. Johnson while he's in the shower, you'd better answer to the name "Mrs. Johnson.")
Joey Logano: Started 20th, finished 25th and 42 fantasy points. The only noise Logano made on Sunday was in his postrace comments (about halfway down this Toyota quote sheet), when he said, "Seems like anyone can win these things these says." Almost anyone, apparently.
Kasey Kahne: Started 2nd, finished 18th, 48 laps led and 81 fantasy points. Kahne pocketed 10 bonus points for leading the most laps. Kahne dominated the first quarter of the race, but a late spinout by Landon Cassill forced him on to the grass, which did enough damage to the front end to ruin his chances.
David Ragan: Started 1st, finished 23rd, 1 lap led and 66 fantasy points. Yes, we started the polesitter and benched the driver who won the whole thing. These things happen in fantasy sports.
But fantasy sports is a week-by-week thing. A win or loss one week doesn't necessarily guarantee results next week. And this week, NASCAR sends its Sprint Cup drivers back to the tricky triangle of Pocono Raceway. We have until Friday night to select the People's Pitstop lineup, and the polls are now open. Please feel free to vote now.

The People's Choice - Indianapolis

Sorry this post is late. Guess that "holding out for a new contract" idea was pretty lame.
Anyway, you, the Internet, were asked to select the People's Pitstop roster for Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And, as we shall see shortly, you did a heck of a job with your selections.
A List: Two former winners on this track dominated this poll. Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon got to qualify their way into the starting lineup. Johnson took the starting spot by qualifying third, and he got the People's Pitstop 3 bonus points for doing so.
B List: The voters were all over the map this week. The top four vote-getters were Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Joey Logano. Logano (20th) edged out Earnhardt (22nd) and Newman (23rd) for one of the two starting spots. Kahne took the other one by storm. He qualified second, earning the Internet's favorite fantasy NASCAR team 5 points.
C List: This poll was the piece de resistance. For the umpteenth time, you selected David Ragan and Paul Menard for our roster. Ragan made the most of this opportunity. He put his car on the freaking pole and got us 10 bonus points.
That's right; before they even drop the green flag on this race, we have scored 18 points.
Hopefully, we can keep this dominance going during the race and with our predictions, which are coming up in the next post.

Fearless Predictions - Kentucky

Whether you're spending the weekend working on your bucket list or your honey-do list, we're glad you've taken a moment to check out our predictions for NASCAR drivers who will finish in the top 10 at Saturday night's Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Motor Speedway. Last week's forecasts went a respectable 2-2, lifting our season record to 18-42.
One from the front: Even though this is the Sprint Cup debut for Kentucky, there is still some useful history here. For example, Brad Keselowski, who starts 6th tonight, has four top-four finishes on this track in Nationwide Series races, including a win on Friday night.
One from the back: It's a good thing the rule here is to pick a driver starting in the back 10, instead of the back nine. That's because the only driver back here whom most racing fans could pick out of a police lineup is Jamie McMurray, who starts 34th.
Two from the middle: One thing that might have gotten lost in the hoopla over David Ragan's Daytona win last week was the fact that Matt Kenseth had a car good enough to push Ragan to the checkered flag. This week, Kenseth starts 13th and can focus on his own car's chances.
Two spots behind him, in 15th place, we find Joey Logano, who has both short- and long-term history on his side. In the long-term category (or as long-term as you can get with a driver who still looks like he's late for geometry class), Logano has three Nationwide wins at Kentucky. In the short-term category, he has finished in the top 10 in the last two Sprint Cup races. Either fact would be good enough to pick him.
Enjoy the race, everybody. We'll be back with results.

Fearless Predictions - Dover

The NASCAR folks may have issues with Mother Nature on Sunday at Dover International Speedway, but the people who bring you this fine Web site should have no trouble getting this week's top 10 driver forecasts to you. Of course, this may not necessarily be a good thing. Last week's predictions went 0-4, lowering our season record to 8-24.
One from the front: You might look at this 2009 Dover video and think that Joey Logano might not be the best candidate for a top 10 finish. But then we would have to remind you that he finished in the top 10 in both races on this track last season. Logano starts fifth this time and should be able to keep his car near the front.
One from the rear: The official starting list may show Kyle Busch in 7th place, but he's being sent to the rear because he had to replace his engine. Still, this is the guy who won the truck race on this track on Friday. He's also the guy who won last year's spring race at Dover.
Two from the middle: It's hard to pick against Carl Edwards these days. He's starting 12th this week, but he won the Nationwide race on Saturday, and he almost won last week's Sprint Cup race at Darlington. Oh, and did we mention he's the points leader?
And then there's Greg Biffle. He's starting 12th today and sits quietly in ninth place in driver points. Unless you looked up his career statistics, you would never guess that he has 10 finishes in the top 10 on this track. (Only Bristol has given him more top 10 finishes.) You also wouldn't guess that he has won here twice; only Homestead-Miami Speedway has sent him to Victory Lane more often.
Enjoy the race, everybody. We'll be back with results.

An Unexpected Timeout

Because of a family emergency, updates of this blog will be sporadic at best over the next few days. For now, let's just give you the starting lineup for the People's Pitstop for NASCAR's Sunday season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

A List: Another poll, another tie settle by a qualifying session. This one gives us Carl Edwards (who qualified 2nd) starting over Denny Hamlin (who qualified 37th).

B List: Three drivers tied for the right to vie for two starting spots. Jamie McMurray (3rd) and Clint Bowyer (17th) will start, while Joey Logano (19th) will join David Reutimann on the bench.

C List: Even here, we had a tie. The qualifying session gives Regan Smith (10th) the nod over Scott Speed (41st).

The poll results appear below. And you still have time to vote on the People's Pigskin lineup for this weekend's People's League clash with the Hudson Valley Hawks. Please vote now, and thanks in advance for your patience.

A Merry Time in Martinsville

We'll update the football happenings in a post Monday. But for now, it's time to celebrate a great rebound for the People's Pitstop. The Internet's favorite fantasy NASCAR team piled up 326 points at Sunday's race at Martinsville Speedway. Our season total is 8,506, good enough for 61,199th overall on Yahoo Sports and lifting us 13 spots, to 83rd, in the Fans of From the Marbles league. Amazingly, at a track where you can go a lap down by sneezing, all four of our drivers finished on the lead lap.

Here's how we got where we are.

Denny Hamlin: Started 1st, finished 1st, 40 laps led and 110 fantasy points. Days don't get much better than Hamlin's. He's now within 6 points of Jimmie Johnson in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Joey Logano: Started 22nd, finished 6th and 80 fantasy points. All that was missing from Logano's day was the chance to lead a lap.

Jamie McMurray: Started 9th, finished 11th and 70 fantasy points. No word as of yet about whether McMurray gets to keep the title of NASCAR's most exciting driver.

Paul Menard: Started 12th, finished 13th and 66 fantasy points. Menard finishes his season for us with a surprisingly strong record for a C List driver. If he can avoid being swallowed whole by the mess at Richard Petty Motorspots, he should find himself on a different fantasy racing list next year.

The polls for next week's race will go up Monday. In the meantime, enjoy the Sunday night game. You, the Internet, have earned it.

The People's Choice - Martinsville

Yet another week has come and gone, and it's time once again to thank you, the Internet, for selecting the People's Pitstop lineup for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway. Here are your selections.

A List. It really wouldn't be the People's Pitstop if we didn't have at least one tie. This one was between two teammates: Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. Once again, we will use the qualifying session to break this tie, so stay tuned.

B List. This poll produced some more clear-cut results. Our winner is Jamie McMurray, and our runner-up is Joey Logano. Both drivers will start, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne will watch the proceedings from the bench.

C List. This week, we will say farewell to yet another driver. Paul Menard will start his last race of the season. Try to contain your tears. Our old friend Sam Hornish Jr. will sit on the bench.

Thanks again for voting on this lineup, and if you haven't done so already, please cast your votes for the People's Pigskin lineup for its fantasy football matchup against Team Z. Those polls will close Sunday morning, while the poll on the worst NFL team will close Saturday. The results of the NASCAR polls appear below. We'll update this post after the qualifying session.

UPDATED 4:30 P.M. Qualifying just wrapped up, and Hamlin just wrapped up a 10-point bonus by winning the pole. He earned a starting spot alongside McMurray (who qualified 9th), Menard (12th) and Logano (22nd).

The People's Choice - Fontana

Once again, we owe you, the Internet, a debt of gratitude. You came out to vote on the People's Pitstop lineup for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Fontana. Here are the results.

A List. A great run will come to an end as Jimmie Johnson takes the starting spot for the final time this season. Jeff Gordon will watch this one from the bench.

B List. One of the starting spots is settled. It will go to this week's poll winner, Ryan Newman. The other spot will come down to qualifying results and will go to either Kasey Kahne or Joey Logano. Meanwhile, one bench spot goes to Jamie McMurray.

C List. Another clear winner, and another driver appearing for the last time in the starting lineup: A.J. Allmendinger. As you can see below, he ran away with this poll. Paul Menard, one of the many drivers tied for second, will get the bench spot.

This post will be updated as soon as possible after Friday's qualifying session. In the meantime, don't forget to vote on the football polls. We'll be back with some predictions.

UPDATED 9:15 P.M. By qualifying 5th, Kahne earned the starting spot over Logano, who qualified 10th. And even though he won't start for us, McMurray will contribute to our bottom line by earning the pole and giving us a 10-point bonus.

Starting the Chase with a Dud

We'll sum up the People's Pigskin's weekend Monday morning. Right now, it's time to sum up the People's Pitstop's Sunday afternoon.

In a word: BLAH!!

The Internet's favorite fantasy NASCAR team picked up only 214 points during the first Chase race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The season total is now 7,198, good enough for 55,424th overall on Yahoo Sports and dropping us 26 spots, to 77th, in the Fans of From the Marbles league.

Here's how those less-than-pleasant results came to be.

Tony Stewart: Started 3rd, finished 24th, 100 laps led and 57 fantasy points, including 3 for qualifying 3rd and 10 for leading a lap. This weekend could have turned out so much better if Tony hadn't "run him out of gas."

Joey Logano: Started 31st, finished 35th (44 laps behind the leaders) and 22 fantasy points. You never want your driver's race summary to include the words "broken gear box." In fact, you'd probably prefer to see none of those words in there.

Clint Bowyer: Started 2nd, finished 1st, 177 laps led and 115 fantasy points, including 5 for qualifying well and 20 for leading the most laps. Stewart's unraveling put Bowyer into position to take home the win and announce himself as a legitimate contender for this year's Cup.

Scott Speed: Started 28th, finished 36th (87 laps behind the leaders) and 20 fantasy points. Sometimes you're a contender for the checkered flag, and sometimes you're the guy who bounces off a wall within the first 30 laps.

Speaking of bouncing, it's time for the People's Pitstop to bounce back. NASCAR takes its act to Dover, and it's time for the lineup polls. They will close Thursday evening.

We'll be back with the football results.

The People's Choice - New Hampshire

Once again, we at the People's Pigskin owe a debt of gratitude to you, the Internet. You thought hard and weighed all the relevant factors, and you helped us set the lineup for the People's Pitstop for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Here are the results.

A List. This list is populated with a lot of the drivers contending for the Sprint Cup, and we had a three-way tie between Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin. The reshuffling after last week's race has made the usual tiebreaker of driver points less relevant for this particular week, so we went by Cup titles. Johnson and Stewart have them, Hamlin does not. We'll return to points next week. For now, Johnson and Stewart go into this week's qualifying session battling for a starting spot.

B List. One of the starting spots has been finalized by Joey Logano's narrow win in this poll. Three other drivers are fighting for the other spot: Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth and Clint Bowyer. If Burton or Kenseth win the qualifying tiebreaker, he'll start for the Internet's favorite fantasy NASCAR team for the last time.

C List. This poll produced another clear-cut winner: Scott Speed. He gets the starting spot, while Sam Hornish Jr. will watch from the bench and wonder how much longer he will be a Penske Racing employee. (That bench spot would have gone to Mattias Ekstrom, but he isn't entered for this race.)

The results appear below. Thank you for voting, and please vote in the fantasy football polls if you haven't done so already. They'll close Sunday morning.

We will update this post after qualifying concludes.

UPDATED 5 P.M. The results are in, and once again, the People's Pitstop earn some bonuses. Tony Stewart beat out Jimmie Johnson for the A List starting spot, and he earned us a 3-point bonus for qualifying 3rd. Clint Bowyer beat out both Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth for the B List spot, and he earned us a 5-point bonus for qualifying 2nd. Joey Logano, sitting in the other B List spot, qualified 31st, and Scott Speed, holding the C List spot, qualified 28th.

We'll be back with some predictions.

Another Uneven Week (and New Polls)

The People's Pitstop tried to tame the Lady in Black Saturday night. Instead, we earned a stripe of our own.

The Internet's favorite fantasy racing team scored 251 points this week. Our season total is 251, bringing us up to a tie for 101,631st overall on Yahoo Sports and leaving us at 143rd in the Fans of From the Marbles league. Here's the breakdown:

Jeff Gordon: Started 2nd, finished 4th, 110 laps led and 109 fantasy points. That total includes 5 bonus points for qualifying so well and 20 bonus points for leading more laps than anyone else. All that's missing from Gordon's season so far is a win.

Jeff Burton: Started 11th, finished 8th, 31 laps led and 86 fantasy points. Burton's total includes 10 bonus points for leading a lap. At one point late in the race, he and Gordon were in first and second place. Too bad neither one could seal the deal. And it's too bad you don't get bonus points for having the fastest lap of the race.

And just like last week, the results take a turn for the worse at this point.

Joey Logano: Started 13th, finished 27th (4 laps behind the leaders) and 38 bonus points. Logano had trouble late in the race and never really got a chance to recover.

A.J. Allmendinger: Started 12th, finished 37th (189 laps behind the leaders) and 18 fantasy points. A.J. got an early start on his trip home for Mother's Day by getting into a scary wreck with Jimmie Johnson.

But one of the good things about a season as long as NASCAR's is that there always seems to be time to catch up. This week, the Sprint Cup series heads to Dover, and once again you, the Internet, get to pick our lineup. The polls are open and will stay open until Thursday night. Please vote now.

The People's Choice - Darlington

Sorry this post is so late. I was mourning two things: the end of JaMarcus Russell's career with the Oakland Raiders and the end of Ryan Leaf's reign as the biggest draft bust in the National Football League's history. We'll miss you, Ryan.

Anyway, you, the Internet, have spoken, and since we now have the qualifying results, we can reveal the full lineup the People's Pitstop will field for Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Darlington.

A List. This poll produced the clearest winner of all: Jeff Gordon. And you, the Internet, may be on to something. Gordon qualified second for Saturday's race, earning the Internet's favorite fantasy racing team 5 bonus points right off the bat. Jimmie Johnson will sit on the bench.

B List. One clear winner emerged in this poll: Jeff Burton, who qualified 11th. After Burton, there was a big tie that was broken when Joey Logano qualified 13th. The bench spots go to Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth.

C List. Again, we had a tie that was broken by Friday's qualifying session. Your winner (and starter) is A.J. Allmendinger, who qualified 12th. Scott Speed will get a spot on the bench.

The poll results appear below. The new poll is about Mr. Russell's future. Feel free to vote now, even if you're this guy. We'll be back with our predictions for the top 10 finishers.

The People's Choice - Atlanta

Once again, you, the Internet, were given the task of filling out the lineup for the People's Pitstop fantasy racing team. And once again you delivered a lineup. Here's the breakdown of who will represent the Internet's favorite fantasy NASCAR team at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday.

A List. The starting spot has a familiar ring to it: Jimmie Johnson gets the nod for the third week in a row. The backup spot goes to his car's co-owner, Jeff Gordon.

B List. We've got the driver who won last week's race in Las Vegas, so it makes sense that another starting spot goes to the runner-up in that race, Kevin Harvick. The other starting spot goes to Matt Kenseth. And we even have clear winners for the bench spots: Joey Logano and Jamie McMurray.

C List. The starting spot goes to the same driver who held the spot last week, Scott Speed. And as you can see from the poll results below, we have a logjam of candidates for the backup spot. Once again, we go to the NASCAR driver points to break the tie, and the winner is Paul Menard.

Now that the lineup is settled, everyone can get back to their favorite early March pastime: watching the NFL free agency market. The lineup poll results appear below. We'll keep the TV poll up until Sunday, so be sure to vote on that. We'll be back later with some predictions.
