Our New Kicker (and London Calling)

First of all, thanks to those of you who voted on which kicker the People's Pigskin would claim off the waiver wire for this week's People's League matchup against the nuckin' futs. The winner of this poll was Jason Hanson, who has been added to the lineup in place of the unneeded Randy McMichael. (We hardly knew ye, Randy.) The results appear at the bottom of this post.

Now, it's time to turn our attention to the renewal of an annual NFL tradition. By "annual," of course, we mean "in the last few years." The National Football League, in its never-ending quest for more money fans, has instituted an International Series of games. This year's version has the Denver Broncos playing the San Francisco 49ers Sunday in London's Wembley Stadium.

The 49ers will make the journey without Alex Smith. (I'll leave it those players who have Smith on his roster to say whether that's a good thing.) The Broncos may be making the journey without their pride after the shelling they suffered at the hands of the Oakland Raiders last week.

There has been some debate about whether flying to and from London puts too much strain on an NFL team, even one that gets its bye week immediately after the game. But the New England Patriots probably would beg to differ. They hammered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year in London by a score of 35-7. Tom Brady threw three touchdowns, and the Patriots defense/special teams benefitted from an interception that Brandon Meriweather (yes, that Brandon Meriweather) returned for a touchdown.

The lesson: Just because a game is being played in an unusual time zone doesn't make the players any less relevant in fantasy football.

Remember to vote in our polls. The NASCAR polls will close Friday night, while the football polls will close Sunday morning.

Fearless Football Predictions - Week 2

Someone call the Pope, because we may have a miracle on our hands.

Last week's predictions for the People's League were perfectly accurate. That's right. FIVE-AND-FRICKIN-OH, BABY!!! That still doesn't mean you should use them for anything other than entertainment purposes. (You listening, Tim Donaghy?) It does mean the bar is set pretty high for the rest of the season. Here goes.

People's Pigskin vs. Hudson Valley Hawks. The Internet's favorite fantasy football team had no trouble cruising to victory last week. And there's no reason for the winning ways to stop here. The Pigskin takes another one.

NFL2K10 RedZone vs. t-bay cuervonatersXXL. Both teams won their week 1 matchups, and both have players in the Monday night game. In the end, though, Vernon Davis will make the difference and lead the RedZone to another victory, no matter what play his coaches call.

Feely Her Up ... vs. nuckin' futs. In addition to Beanie Wells' gimpy knee, the former Beanie's Weenies now have to deal with an injury to Kellen Winslow. Both players are being called "game-time decisions." Those decisions usually don't end up going well for fantasy players. Look for the futs to win here.

Chicago VinSethBears vs. Fighting Amish. The Amish plodded their win to a narrow win last week, but now they have to face Tom Brady. Children may be scared of Brady's Javier Bardem haircut (can't you picture him going out to the coin toss and telling the Jets, "Call it ... friend-o"?), but fantasy players should fear his arm. It will produce enough points to lead the VinSethBears to victory.

cowboys romero vs. Team 9. This one is a puzzler. Both teams lost last week. As of this writing, one plans to start Kevin Kolb (who is out for being concussed), while the other plans to start Ben Roethlisberger (who is still out for being stupid). Still, Marques Coltson should give the Cowboys just enough points to seal the late win.

The lineup polls are still open, but they will close Sunday morning, so please vote now if you haven't done so already. We'll be back with some NASCAR predictions.

Last Word? Try Opening Salvo

Everyone circles a certain date on the NFL offseason calendar: the day by which all teams must whittle their lineups to 53 players. "Cut day" is known far and wide as the date when many football dreams die, as well as the day when players learn whether they are "safe," or at least as safe as a player ever can be in this league.

It's also the day when we fantasy players are supposed to have some sort of clarity about who's part of a team's plans and who's not. Matt Leinart wasn't part of the plan for the Arizona Cardinals. Ditto for T.J. Houshmandzadeh and the Seattle Seahawks.

This year, "cut day" was Saturday, September 4. But it was also the day when some NFL teams seemed to start forming their plans for the 2010-11 season.

Since Saturday, there have been plenty of reports about plenty of players. Some of the stories are absolutely useless to the average fantasy players. In one Yahoo fantasy league, I happen to have Tom Brady, whose name had a "breaking news" icon next to it this evening. The news that Yahoo felt fantasy players needed to know? The New England Patriots are reportedly close to signing Brady to an extension. The effect of that potential deal on this year's fantasy teams? None.

There was also news about a certain Heisman trophy winner (this one, not this one) potentially being stripped of that trophy. The effect of that on this year's fantasy teams? None. As we learned on "cut day" when two former winners got the axe, the NFL hasn't taken a player's trophy case into account for a long time.

Now, on to the post-cut developments that will affect fantasy teams. First, Darrelle Revis made a lot of fantasy players happy by deciding not to extend his holdout into the regular season. So, yes, those of you who drafted the New York Jets defense/special teams way too early can breathe easier.

If you spent a late pick on the Washington Redskins defense, it's time to scan the waiver wire. Albert Haynesworth, the $100 million malcontent who has spent the preseason ticking off his coaches, may soon be out the door. Since all he'd probably draw is draft picks, he will leave a hole in the middle. Whether a hole would be better than Haynesworth is up to fantasy players.

Oh, and as far as Houshmandzadeh, Leinart and Troy Smith are concerned, all three have new homes now. Houshmandzadeh will probably get significant playing time Monday night, while the other two are only a play like this away from being relevant in fantasy football again.

It just goes to show that fantasy football is a seven-days-a-week hobby. Plan accordingly.

We'll be back with a look at this week's NASCAR track.

Second-Best of the Rest?

Congratulations are in order for all the winners in Sunday's Landshark Maniacs playoffs, including Big Lough O, which won the league championship by beating the Northeast Dragons, and the Southern Rebels, which beat the People's Pigskin by a score of 167-145 for the title of Best of the Rest (that is, best among fantasy football teams that didn't make the playoffs). Here's how your favorite fantasy team did in the last week of the regular season.

Kurt Warner, QB. The stats: 4 for 6 passing, 31 yards and 1 fantasy point. The Arizona Cardinals, who had already been eliminated from the race for a first-week playoff bye, pulled most of its starters before halftime. Um...oops?

Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB. The stats: 6 rushes, 19 yards and 1 fantasy point. Um...ditto?

Matt Forte, RB. The stats: 16 rushes for 101 yards, 3 receptions for 23 yards and 12 fantasy points. Forte and the rest of the Chicago Bears showed just enough to keep themselves relevant to fantasy football players during the off season. (Of course, the fact that they were facing the Detroit Lions didn't hurt.)

Greg Jennings, Flex. The stats: 3 receptions, 29 yards and 2 fantasy points. Once again, the Green Bay Packers managed to put up all kinds of points without any significant contribution from the man who was supposed to be their primary receiver.

Chad Ochocinco, WR. The stats: 0 receptions, 0 yards and 0 fantasy points. Ochocinco slipped on the Giants Stadium turf during the pregame warmups and left the Sunday night game against the New York Jets with a knee injury. If only tweets had fantasy value...

Nate Washington, WR. The stats: 6 receptions, 83 yards and 8 fantasy points. It was heartening to see that the Tennessee Titans, who were eliminated from the playoffs the previous week, were motivated to play a strong game and help Chris Johnson reach the 2,000-yard mark.

Kevin Boss, TE. The stats: 0 receptions, 0 yards and 0 fantasy points. Meanwhile, the New York Giants, another team knocked out of the playoffs the previous week, laid a giant egg against the Minnesota Vikings. (It's interesting how no one is complaining about the Vikings, who wrapped up a first-round bye, getting gifts from its opponents.)

Jay Feely, K. The stats: 3 for 3 in field goals, 4 for 4 in extra points and 14 fantasy points. If nothing else, we've found a kicker to target in this summer's fantasy drafts.

San Francisco 49ers, D/ST. The stats: 8 sacks, 6 points allowed and 15 fantasy points. Mike Singetary has its team heading in the right direction.

Bench. Matt Cassel, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Julius Jones got 6 fantasy points each. The Philadelphia Eagles defense/special teams got 3.

Remember, the People's Pigskin will be competing in the NFL Fantasy Playoff Challenge. We'll be back tomorrow to get your help in setting the lineup.

Pick the People's Team - Week 17

OK, fellow fantasy football fans. It's all come down to this.

There's one week left for the People's Pigskin to claim the title of Best of the Rest. The Southern Rebels currently hold a 2-point lead, and it's time for you, the Internet, to vote on our lineup for the final week of the NFL regular season. Here's how the lineup looks right now.

Quarterback. Our current starter is Kurt Warner, whose Arizona Cardinals face the Green Bay Packers and still have a chance at earning the NFC's No. 2 seed and a bye. If you want to bench Warner, Matt Cassel can come off the bench.

Running back. Warner's teammate, Chris "Beanie" Wells, remains a starter. He's joined by Matt Forte, who seems rejuvenated after Monday night's victory. His Chicago Bears get the Detroit Lions this week. Either one can be benched in favor of Derrick Ward. (Please note that the plan is to keep Donald Brown on the bench, since the Indianapolis Colts have shown they are quite willing to bench starters late in the season, even if a 16-0 season is on the line.)

Flex. This spot seems to be good luck for Greg Jennings, so he's staying right there. His Green Bay Packers get the Cardinals. Again, Derrick Ward is available to fill his slot.

Wide receiver. The starters remain Chad Ochocinco, whose Cincinnati Bengals play the New York Jets on Sunday night, and Nate Washington, whose Tennessee Titans visit the Seattle Seahawks. If either receiver is benched, T.J. Houshmandzadeh gets the call. (Please note that the plan is for Austin Collie, like Brown, to stay on the bench because of the Colts' bench-happy ways.)

Defense/special teams. The San Francisco 49ers won't be going to the playoffs, but they do get the starting nod here, since they get to close out their season against the Detroit Lions. If you don't like that matchup, you can vote to start the Philadelphia Eagles instead.

No changes at tight end (Kevin Boss) or kicker (Jay Feely).

The lineup poll is open and will remain open until Sunday. So will the fantasy football MVP poll right below it. Please vote now.

We'll be back with some thoughts on the Pro Bowl rosters.

Call It a Halftime Report

The People's Pigskin remains in contention for the highly sought title of Best Fantasy Football Team Not to Make the Landshark Maniacs Playoffs.

Our team currently trails the Southern Rebels by a score of 94-92. As of Monday afternoon, that makes our matchup the closest one in the league. Here's how we got here.

Kurt Warner, QB. The stats: 24 of 38 passing, 313 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 rush for 10 yards, 1 fumble and 19 fantasy points. Warner's Arizona Cardinals wrapped up the NFC West title last week, and this week Warner became the second quarterback (after Fran Tarkenton) to throw at least 100 touchdowns for two teams.

Derrick Ward, RB. The stats: 7 rushes, 32 yards and 3 fantasy points. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers pulled off a mother of an upset against the New Orleans Saints, but it was despite Ward's performance, not because of it.

Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB. The stats: 17 rushes for 68 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 reception for 25 yards and 14 fantasy points. Wells will definitely go much higher this fall in fantasy drafts.

Greg Jennings, Flex. The stats: 4 receptions, 111 yards and 11 fantasy points. The Green Bay Packers played their way into the NFL playoffs, and Jennings got everything but the touchdowns.

Chad Ochocinco, WR. The stats: 4 receptions, 31 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 rush for minus-2 yards and 9 fantasy points. Ochocinco, on the other hand, got nothing but the touchdown, which wrapped up the AFC North title for his Cincinnati Bengals.

Nate Washington, WR. The stats: 4 receptions, 39 yards and 3 fantasy points. You may notice that his stats are nearly identical to Ochocinco's in every way except one: no visits to the end zone.

Kevin Boss, TE. The stats: 5 receptions, 49 yards and 4 fantasy points. Not a single New York Giant covered himself in glory Sunday in the team's final appearance in Giants Stadium, and Boss was no exception.

Jay Feely, K. The stats: 2 for 2 on field goals, 1 for 1 on extra points and 8 fantasy points. A much better afternoon for Feely and the rest of the Jets than last Sunday. His team is now in "win and you're in the playoffs" status.

San Francisco 49ers, D/ST. The stats: 3 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 sacks, 6 points allowed and 21 fantasy points. Not bad at all for a team with no postseason bid to motivate it.

Bench. Matt Cassel, Donald Brown and Austin Collie scored 9 fantasy points each. The Philadelphia Eagles defense scored 4.

We'll be back with our lineup poll for week 17. Until then, enjoy Monday night's thrashing.

Pick the People's Team - Week 16

With our recent victory over the Houston Wreckin' Crew, the People's Pigskin gets to play the Southern Rebels for fifth place (in other words, the top spot among nonplayoff teams) in the Landshark Maniacs fantasy football league. That means it's time once again for you, the Internet, to help pick this week's lineup. Here are the contenders.

Quarterback. Even though one of his touchdowns last week was changed to an Anquan Boldin run, we still have Kurt Warner in the starting lineup. He faces the St. Louis Rams this week. If that matchup isn't juicy enough, you can vote to start Matt Cassel instead.

Running back. Another Arizona Cardinal, Chris "Beanie" Wells, stays in the starting lineup. He's joined by Derrick Ward, who's coming off our proverbial bench and facing the New Orleans Saints. If you vote to bench either one, we can call on Matt Forte.

Flex. Greg Jennings worked well in this spot last week, so he's there again this week. He gets to play the Seattle Seahawks. If you want to bench him, we can pull Austin Collie off the bench.

Wide receiver. You already know about the Nate Washington poll, which will close Friday morning. The other starter, at least for the moment, is Chad Ochocinco, who plays the Kansas City Chiefs in the first home game for the Cincinnati Bengals since Chris Henry's death. Austin Collie can take this spot, too.

Defense/special teams. A switch for the Pigskin here. Our starting defense is the San Francisco 49ers. They play the Detroit Lions on Sunday. If you want to bench the 49ers, we can put the Philadelphia Eagles on the field.

Kevin Boss remains our tight end, and Jay Feely remains our kicker.

The poll is now open. We'll be back tomorrow with a Christmas Eve edition of the Landshark Maniacs predictions.

Fearless Predictions - Week 10

It's time once again for the often ridiculed, rarely imitated Landshark Maniacs predictions. Last week's version went an impressive 4-1, missing only the game involving the People's Pigskin. (What's that saying about an infinite number of monkeys?) The season record is now 22-23, and it's time for the forecasts, along with our fantasy football team, to break the .500 barrier.

Peoples Pigskin vs. Big Lough O. The headlines from Thursday night focused on Jay Cutler, but Matt Forte quietly had a solid night, producing 16 fantasy points for you, the Internet. That strong start will fuel a victory for the Pigskin.

Northeast Dragons vs. D.C. Destroyers. The Destroyers are also off to a solid start, getting 7 fantasy points from Greg Olsen. This one will be very close, but the Minnesota Vikings defense will make the difference and secure a win for the Dragons.

Houston Wreckin' Crew vs. Tinks Revenge. Thursday night was disappointing for both of these teams. Vernon Davis, who had the bright idea of running his mouth before the game, produced only 1 fantasy point for the Revenge. Cutler had an even worse night, giving the crew only 2 points. It will be easier for the Revenge to get over Davis' shortfall, so the call here is for a Revenge win.

T-bay jacks 151rum stumblrs vs. Southern Rebels. The Rebels got a windfall from Frank Gore, who scored the only touchdown in Thursday's night game and produced 18 fantasy points. That lead will prove insurmountable, and the Rebels will get another win.

Hawaiian Surfriders vs. Ravens Fan T Sizzle. The Surfriders are starting three Vikings against the Detroit Lions, who are currently 31st in scoring defense. This strategy is the ticket to a victory for the Surfriders.

We'll be back tomorrow with some more recommended reading. In the meantime, be sure to vote in the polls on the right side of the page.

Receiver Developments

Don't oversleep if you're a fantasy football fan. If you do, you run the risk of missing major stories about your players.

If you were one of the many who drafted Michael Crabtree before the season, only to ditch him as his holdout lingered into the regular season, you may be interested to know that Crabtree has agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Of course, this doesn't automatically make Mr. I Should Get As Much As Darrius Heyward-Bey relevant to fantasy football. Just because Crabtree is on the team does not automatically mean he'll be in the starting lineup on Sunday. He has a lot of catching up to do.

And if you're a fantasy player, that's not even the biggest news from Wednesday morning. ESPN Radio is reporting that Braylon Edwards has been traded to the New York Jets. That one, obviously, is huge. Edwards goes from playing with the Brady Quinn/Derek Anderson combo platter to catching passes from Mark Sanchez. He also escapes the Eric Mangini stalag that the Cleveland Browns are quickly becoming. (No word on whether LeBron James is letting Edwards off the hook, though.)

Back with more fantasy thoughts later.

Behind the People's Victory

There were no Monday night miracles last night, even though Brett Favre was on the field. The People's Pigskin held on to defeat the Southern Rebels by a score of 115-94. Our record improved to 3-1. Here's a breakdown of how it happened.

Trent Edwards, QB. The stats: 14 of 26 passing, 192 yards, 1 touchdown, 3 interceptions, and 5 fantasy points. The Miami Dolphins made life miserable for Trent and the other Buffalo Bills all day. But fear not, fantasy football fans -- Kurt Warner is back in the lineup this week.

Matt Forte, RB. The stats: 12 rushes for 121 yards and 1 touchdown, 2 receptions for 29 yards, and 19 fantasy points. The Detroit Lions were just the tonic that Forte and the rest of the Chicago Bears needed, as the Monsters of the Midway racked up 48 points. Expect more good things from Matt.

Steve Slaton, RB. The stats: 21 rushes for 65 yards and a touchdown, 2 receptions for 24 yards and a second touchdown, 1 fumble, and 18 fantasy points. Another runner with an easy opponent. (Yes, I said it, and I might be banned for it.) The Houston Texans maintained control over the Oakland Raiders all day. Again, more good things to come to Steve.

Donald Brown, Flex. The stats: 9 rushes for 33 yards and 1 touchdown, 1 reception for 13 yards, and 10 fantasy points. One of Peyton Manning's many strengths is ball distribution. Brown is officially a backup to Joseph Addai, but the Indianapolis Colts are not shy about putting the ball in Brown's hands.

Greg Jennings, WR. The stats: 3 receptions, 31 yards, and 3 fantasy points. The Minnesota Vikings had the Green Bay Packers' number for most of the night. Jared Allen sacked Aaron Rodgers 4.5 times all by himself. It's tough for Aaron (or his predecessor) to complete passes when he's flat on his back.

Chad Ochocinco, WR. The stats: 3 receptions for 24 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 14 fantasy points. In all, Chad was targeted 11 times against the Cleveland Browns. There was no Dawg Pound leap, but maybe that was for the best.

Kellen Winslow, TE. The stats: 2 receptions, 21 yards, and 2 fantasy points. OK, so maybe the quarterback switch wasn't the tonic the Tampa Bay Buccaneers needed.

Nick Folk, K. The stats: 1 field goal made, 1 PAT made, and 5 fantasy points. Enough has been said elsewhere about the Dallas Cowboys performance against the Denver Broncos, so let's leave it at that.

San Francisco 49ers D/ST. The stats: 1 interception, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 touchdowns (that's 2 touchdowns scored, by the way), 0 points allowed, and 39 fantasy points. Once again, this defense was the top scorer in fantasy football this week. Normally, a bye week defense is sent right back to the waiver wire as soon as the other defense's bye week is over. But in this case? I wonder if the words "trade bait" apply here...

Anyway, be sure to vote in the waiver poll and offer a comment. We'll be back later with a look at this week's matchup.

Monday Night Preview (and a Waiver Poll)

There are some gifts that you simply shouldn't investigate too closely. Sometime between Sunday night and Monday afternoon, someone at ESPN changed the point total for the San Francisco 49ers defense/special teams from 31 to 39. As of 7:25 p.m. EDT Monday, that defense is the top fantasy football scorer from week 5 -- not the top-scoring defense, but the top scorer, period. Great call on your part, loyal Web surfers.

As a result of that adjustment, the People's Pigskin enters the Monday night game with a 112-89 lead over the Southern Rebels. (Of course, you'll be watching that game to see if Mason Crosby can outscore Greg Jennings, right?)

Speaking of Jennings, he and Matt Forte have their bye week coming up, and it might be a good idea to get someone off the waiver wire to be available if necessary. You know what that means? Another poll. Here are your choices.

Jerome Harrison, RB, Cleveland Browns. Anyone can benefit from a teammate's injury (in his case, Jamal Lewis' and James Lewis'), but it takes a real player to make the most of the opportunity. Last week Harrison ran for 121 yards and picked up 13 fantasy points. He faces the Buffalo Bills in week 5.

Steve Breaston, WR, Arizona Cardinals. His team had its bye this past week, but in week 3 this so-called third receiver got 94 yards and scored 9 fantasy points. He faces the Houston Texans in week 5.

Kenny Britt, WR, Tennessee Titans. His team is a disappointment, but Britt is getting his share of looks. Last week he racked up 105 yards and scored 10 fantasy points. He faces the Indianapolis Colts in week 5.

Here's the poll. Again, it will be open until Wednesday night, so we can get our request in. And feel free to leave a comment if you think we should go in a different direction.

A Hurry-Up Update

As fantasy football players wait for Sunday night's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Diego Chargers, I should tell you that the People's Pigskin has built a 106-62 lead over the Southern Rebels. Of course, we are not out of the woods yet. The Rebels have Ben Roethlisberger (whose legal fight will linger a little longer) and the San Diego Chargers defense/special teams tonight, along with Mason Crosby tomorrow. We have Greg Jennings tomorrow.

The star of the week so far is the San Francisco 49ers defense/special teams, which put up 31 points for the People's Pigskin. Of course, that should be no surprise by now, since they're coached by this guy.

We'll be back tomorrow with a more updated update. In the meantime, be sure to vote in our latest poll.
