Congratulations are in order for all the winners in Sunday's Landshark Maniacs playoffs, including Big Lough O, which won the league championship by beating the Northeast Dragons, and the Southern Rebels, which beat the People's Pigskin by a score of 167-145 for the title of Best of the Rest (that is, best among fantasy football teams that didn't make the playoffs). Here's how your favorite fantasy team did in the last week of the regular season.
Kurt Warner, QB. The stats: 4 for 6 passing, 31 yards and 1 fantasy point. The Arizona Cardinals, who had already been eliminated from the race for a first-week playoff bye, pulled most of its starters before halftime. Um...oops?
Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB. The stats: 6 rushes, 19 yards and 1 fantasy point. Um...ditto?
Matt Forte, RB. The stats: 16 rushes for 101 yards, 3 receptions for 23 yards and 12 fantasy points. Forte and the rest of the Chicago Bears showed just enough to keep themselves relevant to fantasy football players during the off season. (Of course, the fact that they were facing the Detroit Lions didn't hurt.)
Greg Jennings, Flex. The stats: 3 receptions, 29 yards and 2 fantasy points. Once again, the Green Bay Packers managed to put up all kinds of points without any significant contribution from the man who was supposed to be their primary receiver.
Chad Ochocinco, WR. The stats: 0 receptions, 0 yards and 0 fantasy points. Ochocinco slipped on the Giants Stadium turf during the pregame warmups and left the Sunday night game against the New York Jets with a knee injury. If only tweets had fantasy value...
Nate Washington, WR. The stats: 6 receptions, 83 yards and 8 fantasy points. It was heartening to see that the Tennessee Titans, who were eliminated from the playoffs the previous week, were motivated to play a strong game and help Chris Johnson reach the 2,000-yard mark.
Kevin Boss, TE. The stats: 0 receptions, 0 yards and 0 fantasy points. Meanwhile, the New York Giants, another team knocked out of the playoffs the previous week, laid a giant egg against the Minnesota Vikings. (It's interesting how no one is complaining about the Vikings, who wrapped up a first-round bye, getting gifts from its opponents.)
Jay Feely, K. The stats: 3 for 3 in field goals, 4 for 4 in extra points and 14 fantasy points. If nothing else, we've found a kicker to target in this summer's fantasy drafts.
San Francisco 49ers, D/ST. The stats: 8 sacks, 6 points allowed and 15 fantasy points. Mike Singetary has its team heading in the right direction.
Bench. Matt Cassel, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Julius Jones got 6 fantasy points each. The Philadelphia Eagles defense/special teams got 3.

One Last Update for the Season
There is now only one game left in the National Football League's regular season, and the People's Pigskin will need it to be an offensive show.
In the battle for the coveted title of "Best of the Rest in the Landshark Maniacs," the Pigskin currently trails the Southern Rebels by a score of 163-131. There are no Rebels suiting up in the Sunday night game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the New York Jets. There are two Pigskin players suiting up: Chad Ochocinco and Jay Feely.
In theory, at least, both teams have something on the line tonight. The Jets, of course, need to beat the Bengals to get into the NFL playoffs. The Bengals, as a result of the Houston Texans' victory over the New England Patriots, can clinch the AFC's No. 3 seed (and presumably a more favorable wild card matchup) by beating the Jets.
We'll be back with the final results and a sneak peek at next week's option for the NFL Playoff Fantasy Challenge.

Another week has passed, and once again you, the Internet, have spoken. You voted to leave our lineup the way it is now for our week 17 matchup against the Southern Rebels for the title of Best Team that Didn't Make the Landshark Maniacs Playoffs. In the other poll, we have a split decision. Your choice for fantasy football's most valuable player was a tie between two running backs: Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson. Congratulations to both players and to the fantasy football players lucky enough to have Johnson and/or Peterson on their teams this year.
Now it's time for the other end of the spectrum: the fantasy football bust of the year. This poll will exclude players who had season-ending injuries. We're looking for the player who suited up for 16 games (or close to that many) but really didn't deliver for fantasy players. This poll will be up all week. Pick the People's Team - Week 17
OK, fellow fantasy football fans. It's all come down to this.
There's one week left for the People's Pigskin to claim the title of Best of the Rest. The Southern Rebels currently hold a 2-point lead, and it's time for you, the Internet, to vote on our lineup for the final week of the NFL regular season. Here's how the lineup looks right now.
Quarterback. Our current starter is Kurt Warner, whose Arizona Cardinals face the Green Bay Packers and still have a chance at earning the NFC's No. 2 seed and a bye. If you want to bench Warner, Matt Cassel can come off the bench.
Running back. Warner's teammate, Chris "Beanie" Wells, remains a starter. He's joined by Matt Forte, who seems rejuvenated after Monday night's victory. His Chicago Bears get the Detroit Lions this week. Either one can be benched in favor of Derrick Ward. (Please note that the plan is to keep Donald Brown on the bench, since the Indianapolis Colts have shown they are quite willing to bench starters late in the season, even if a 16-0 season is on the line.)
Flex. This spot seems to be good luck for Greg Jennings, so he's staying right there. His Green Bay Packers get the Cardinals. Again, Derrick Ward is available to fill his slot.

Call It a Halftime Report
The People's Pigskin remains in contention for the highly sought title of Best Fantasy Football Team Not to Make the Landshark Maniacs Playoffs.
Our team currently trails the Southern Rebels by a score of 94-92. As of Monday afternoon, that makes our matchup the closest one in the league. Here's how we got here.
Kurt Warner, QB. The stats: 24 of 38 passing, 313 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 rush for 10 yards, 1 fumble and 19 fantasy points. Warner's Arizona Cardinals wrapped up the NFC West title last week, and this week Warner became the second quarterback (after Fran Tarkenton) to throw at least 100 touchdowns for two teams.
Derrick Ward, RB. The stats: 7 rushes, 32 yards and 3 fantasy points. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers pulled off a mother of an upset against the New Orleans Saints, but it was despite Ward's performance, not because of it.
Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB. The stats: 17 rushes for 68 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 reception for 25 yards and 14 fantasy points. Wells will definitely go much higher this fall in fantasy drafts.

A Sunday Evening Update
The People's Pigskin had an enjoyable final Sunday of 2009. As we wait for the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins to kick off, the Internet's favorite football team enjoys a 92-81 lead over the Southern Rebels.
There are no Pigskin players in Sunday night's game or Monday night's game. The Rebels have two players in the Sunday night matchup: Quinton Ganther of the Redskins and Jason Witten of the Cowboys. If they score 10 or fewer fantasy points, the Pigskin will hold the lead at the halfway point in our matchup. (Remember that we're combining week 16 and week 17 scores to determine the title of "Best of the Rest.")

Saturday Afternoon Update
Those of you fortunate enough to have access to NFL Network on Christmas night (either in your own home or whoever was hosting was you) got the gift of seeing the San Diego Chargers make mincemeat of the Tennessee Titans. Unfortunately, one of the victims of this slaughter was Nate Washington, who put up only 3 fantasy points for the People's Pigskin. Washington was the only Titans receiver to get more than 1 catch. That means he was Vince Young's favorite target, but that's cold comfort for fantasy football players.

A Christmas Day Update

Fearless Predictions - Season Finale
There's still time to vote on the Nate Washington and Christmas football polls (both of which will close tomorrow) and the lineup poll (which will close Sunday). In the meantime, it's time for one last set of predictions for the Landshark Maniacs fantasy football league. Again, these are two-week matchups, so week 17 will be in play here, too.
Last week's predictions went 4-1, raising our season record to 41-29. The only miss was the win by the Southern Rebels, our opponent in the final round. Here's hoping the Rebels don't hold that against us.
Let's start with the ninth-place matchup between the Houston Wreckin' Crew and Ravens Fan T Sizzle. In this game, it will be important to mind your Ps and Qs--that is, the "probable" and "questionable" statuses throughout both lineups. This matchup will hinge on Michael Turner, who could put up big numbers for the Crew or injure himself on his first carry and put up a doughnut (as he did in last week's game against the Pigskin). My guess is that Turner will show up for the last two weeks and fuel a victory for the Crew.
Next is the seventh-place match between the D.C. Destroyers and T-bay jacks 151rum stumblrs. Both sides have plenty of players fighting for playoff spots, but the most intriguing player is Chris Johnson, who is chasing a postseason bid, a 2,000-yard season and possibly Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record. Since the Titans need to win both games to get into the playoffs, they'll be motivated to feed Johnson the ball early and often. That will mean big fantasy points for him and a victory for the Destroyers.
The fifth-place match for the title of Best Landshark Maniacs Team Not to Make the Playoffs (yes, I just made that title up) pits the People's Pigskin against the Southern Rebels. Which team is the pick here? Let me give you a hint: In the immortal words of Terrell Owens, "I'd love me some of me."
In the playoff consolation game for third place, we have the Hawaiian Surfriders facing Tinks Revenge. As of this writing, the Surfriders have not selected a kicker, but it probably won't matter. Ray Rice is a contender for fantasy football find of the year, and his team is in a "We need to win both games to get into the playoffs" situation, so he'll get the ball early and often. The Revenge gets the win and the proverbial bronze medal.
Finally, we have the Landshark Maniacs championship game, Northeast Dragons vs. Big Lough O. One thing that's striking about this matchup is the proliferation of 1s and 2s under the "position rank" column. We can honestly say that the two best teams are meeting for the title. (Note to college football fans: We used a playoff to get here. We did not need a fraudulent set of polls and computer numbers. Remember: Playoffs rule.)
Anyway, it's hard to find a player who won't be in a position to put up a ton of points over the next two weeks. Even Drew Brees has a reason to keep slinging the ball in the fourth quarter. (The New Orleans Saints have not wrapped up home-field advantage.) The difference here may be the wide receivers. Given the choice, I'll take Brandon Marshall, Andre Johnson and Vincent Jackson over Roddy White, Terrell Owens and even Wes Welker. As a result, I'll take the Dragons to win it all.

The Revenge gets the win and the proverbial bronze medal.
Finally, we have the Landshark Maniacs championship game, Northeast Dragons vs. Big Lough O. One thing that's striking about this matchup is the proliferation of 1s and 2s under the "position rank" column. We can honestly say that the two best teams are meeting for the title. (Note to college football fans: We used a playoff to get here. We did not need a fraudulent set of polls and computer numbers. Remember: Playoffs rule.)
Anyway, it's hard to find a player who won't be in a position to put up a ton of points over the next two weeks. Even Drew Brees has a reason to keep slinging the ball in the fourth quarter. (The New Orleans Saints have not wrapped up home-field advantage.) The difference here may be the wide receivers. Given the choice, I'll take Brandon Marshall, Andre Johnson and Vincent Jackson over Roddy White, Terrell Owens and even Wes Welker. As a result, I'll take the Dragons to win it all.

Pick the People's Team - Week 16
With our recent victory over the Houston Wreckin' Crew, the People's Pigskin gets to play the Southern Rebels for fifth place (in other words, the top spot among nonplayoff teams) in the Landshark Maniacs fantasy football league. That means it's time once again for you, the Internet, to help pick this week's lineup. Here are the contenders.
Quarterback. Even though one of his touchdowns last week was changed to an Anquan Boldin run, we still have Kurt Warner in the starting lineup. He faces the St. Louis Rams this week. If that matchup isn't juicy enough, you can vote to start Matt Cassel instead.
Running back. Another Arizona Cardinal, Chris "Beanie" Wells, stays in the starting lineup. He's joined by Derrick Ward, who's coming off our proverbial bench and facing the New Orleans Saints. If you vote to bench either one, we can call on Matt Forte.
Flex. Greg Jennings worked well in this spot last week, so he's there again this week. He gets to play the Seattle Seahawks. If you want to bench him, we can pull Austin Collie off the bench.
Wide receiver. You already know about the Nate Washington poll, which will close Friday morning. The People's Win (and the Next Step)
The People's Pigskin made all the right moves and chalked up a 103-100 win this week over the Southern Rebels. Here's a breakdown of how we did it.
Kurt Warner, QB. The stats: 20 of 36 passing, 231 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception, and 11 fantasy points. His Arizona Cardinals did just enough to defeat the New York Giants. The primary credit goes to the defense: Eli Manning was picked off three times.
Steve Slaton, RB. The stats: 18 carries for 67 yards, 4 receptions for 22 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 fumble, and 18 fantasy points. His Houston Texans held off a rally by former No. 1 draft choice Alex Smith to beat the 49ers. Slaton continues to get his touches.
Donald Brown, RB. The stats: 2 carries, 58 yards, and 5 fantasy points. Brown left the game against the St. Louis Rams in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. He says the injury was no big deal, and there was no need for the Indianapolis Colts to risk any aggravation against the Rams. It's disappointing, but it seems like he'll be available next week.
Matt Forte, Flex. The stats: 6 carries for 24 yards, 4 receptions for 25 yards, and 4 fantasy points. The Chicago Bears found themselves in a gargantuan hole early against the Cincinnati Bengals. As a result, they had to abandon any hopes of a running game and throw deep. Fantasy football players, as usual, suffered the consequences.
Greg Jennings, WR. The stats: 5 receptions, 52 yards, and 5 fantasy points. The Green Bay Packers threw a lot of short routes against the Cleveland Browns. That was bad news for a deep threat like Jennings.
Chad Ochocinco, WR. The stats: 10 receptions, 118 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 23 fantasy points. Now that's more like it. Carson Palmer found Ochocinco early and often against the Chicago Bears. Ochocinco has been nothing short of a fantasy football stud.
Chris Cooley, TE. The stats: 2 receptions, 21 yards, and 2 fantasy points. Both catches came on the Redskins opening drive. And it's a good thing Cooley caught them when he could, because his night ended early. (More on him later.)
Nick Folk, K. The stats: 3 for 3 on field goals, 4 for 4 on extra points, and 14 fantasy points. Welcome back to the fold, Folk. The Dallas Cowboys finally had a complete offensive day against the Atlanta Falcons, and the kicker always benefits from this.
Philadelphia Eagles, D/ST. The stats: 1 interception returned for a touchdown, 3 fumble recoveries, 6 sacks, 17 points allowed, and 21 fantasy points. They made us wait until the last minute, but the Eagles' dominance at the line against the Washington Redskins provided the winning margin.
Now, back to Cooley. He left the Monday night game with a broken ankle. His season may or may not be over, but we cannot afford to find out. We need to get another tight end who can play right away. That means it's time for another poll. Here are the nominees:

A Quick Monday Update
Unlike Jim Zorn, it seems as if the People's Pigskin has a chance.
After Sunday's games, including a surprising victory for the Arizona Cardinals, our fantasy football team trails the Southern Rebels by a score of 100-80. The Rebels have no one in Monday's contest between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Dead Coaches Walking...er, Redskins. We have Chris Cooley and the Philadelphia Eagles defense/special teams.

The People's Choice - Week 7

You also voted to suspend Tom Cable for a season if the allegations against him are true. I know the Napa County district attorney decided not to file charges in the incident where Randy Hanson broke his jaw. So that means Cable is in the clear, right? Not necessarily.

Pick the People's Team - Week 7
This week the People's Pigskin has a date with the Southern Rebels. Here's what the lineup looks like now. Three weeks ago the Pigskin defeated the Rebels by a score of 115-92. With your help, the Pigskin can win again.
If you've played fantasy football for any length of time, you've had a week like this one, where it seems like everyone on your bench is injured, on a bye week, or both. However, there are always options. Here are ours.
Quarterback. Once again, Kurt Warner is slated to get the ball. Yes, he faces the New York Giants on Sunday night, but after the Giants loss to the New Orleans Saints last week, that matchup seems less scary. Trent Edwards, who left last week's game with a concussion, is probably not an option, so if you vote to bench Warner, we'll have to dip into the waiver wire for a substitute.
Running back. Your current starters are Steve Slaton, whose receiving is making up for any slack in his running, and Donald Brown, whose Indianapolis Colts face the St. Louis Rams, a team that may be on the verge of throwing in the towel, despite the local optimism. If you disagree, Jamal Lewis is available on the bench.
Flex. This week Matt Forte fills this slot. His fantasy performance has been subpar at best of late, but he's still the starting running back of a team that needs to run the ball (and hit running backs on short passes) to open up the type of vertical passes Jay Cutler can throw. If you want to bench Forte, Jamal Lewis can take this spot.

Behind the People's Victory
There were no Monday night miracles last night, even though Brett Favre was on the field. The People's Pigskin held on to defeat the Southern Rebels by a score of 115-94. Our record improved to 3-1. Here's a breakdown of how it happened.
Trent Edwards, QB. The stats: 14 of 26 passing, 192 yards, 1 touchdown, 3 interceptions, and 5 fantasy points. The Miami Dolphins made life miserable for Trent and the other Buffalo Bills all day. But fear not, fantasy football fans -- Kurt Warner is back in the lineup this week.
Matt Forte, RB. The stats: 12 rushes for 121 yards and 1 touchdown, 2 receptions for 29 yards, and 19 fantasy points. The Detroit Lions were just the tonic that Forte and the rest of the Chicago Bears needed, as the Monsters of the Midway racked up 48 points. Expect more good things from Matt.

(Yes, I said it, and I might be banned for it.) The Houston Texans maintained control over the Oakland Raiders all day. Again, more good things to come to Steve.
Donald Brown, Flex. The stats: 9 rushes for 33 yards and 1 touchdown, 1 reception for 13 yards, and 10 fantasy points. One of Peyton Manning's many strengths is ball distribution. Brown is officially a backup to Joseph Addai, but the Indianapolis Colts are not shy about putting the ball in Brown's hands.

Jared Allen sacked Aaron Rodgers 4.5 times all by himself. It's tough for Aaron (or his predecessor) to complete passes when he's flat on his back.

Monday Night Preview (and a Waiver Poll)
There are some gifts that you simply shouldn't investigate too closely. Sometime between Sunday night and Monday afternoon, someone at ESPN changed the point total for the San Francisco 49ers defense/special teams from 31 to 39. As of 7:25 p.m. EDT Monday, that defense is the top fantasy football scorer from week 5 -- not the top-scoring defense, but the top scorer, period. Great call on your part, loyal Web surfers.
As a result of that adjustment, the People's Pigskin enters the Monday night game with a 112-89 lead over the Southern Rebels. (Of course, you'll be watching that game to see if Mason Crosby can outscore Greg Jennings, right?)

A Hurry-Up Update
As fantasy football players wait for Sunday night's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Diego Chargers, I should tell you that the People's Pigskin has built a 106-62 lead over the Southern Rebels. Of course, we are not out of the woods yet. The star of the week so far is the San Francisco 49ers defense/special teams, which put up 31 points for the People's Pigskin. Of course, that should be no surprise by now, since they're coached by this guy.

The People's Choice - Week 4
Another week has passed, another Raiders critic has probably earned a ban from team facilities, and once again you, the Internet, have spoken. You said that the People's Pigskin should leave its lineup alone for its matchup against the Southern Rebels. Here's where you can follow along as the day progresses.
In the other poll, a majority of you (well, 50% of you, anyway) said you spend 6-8 hours a week working on your fantasy football team. Interestingly, no one chose the "I have no life" option. If you're one of the many spending that much time on your team, go ahead, ignore the side effects, and get some extra sleep this week.
Before you hit the snooze button, though, let me give you a heads-up: If you see a lot of pink while watching this weekend's NFL action, don't worry. You're not having a Dumbo-style hallucination. You're just observing the National Football League's Crucial Catch promotion to fight cancer. The pink apparel and other equipment will be auctioned to raise money for the fight. Help if you can.

Pick the People's Team - Week 4
First of all, thanks to those of you who voted and commented on our defense poll. You were unanimous in saying the San Francisco 49ers should start this week in the Eagles' place, so the 49ers will start in our game against the Southern Rebels.
And now the moment you fantasy football fanatics have all been waiting for ... it's time to pick our starters. Here's who's slated to play right now, and here are your options.
Quarterback. Trent Edwards remains a starter for one simple reason: Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals have a bye week. If you feel Trent needs to take a seat, the People's Pigskin will need to find a free agent.
Running back. Matt Forte and Steve Slaton are our current starters. We have subs available, but they are either questionable with injuries (Jamal Lewis) or on a bye week (Chris "Beanie" Wells). If you want to sit one of them, Derrick Ward could be pressed into service, since the Bucs won't be getting big numbers from their quarterback anytime soon.
Flex. Donald Brown, our top scorer last week, gets the nod once again. If we want someone else, T.J. Houshmandzadeh (whose last name I can now spell in my sleep) can be pressed into service. Either way, we'll have reason to watch the Indianapolis Colts-Seattle Seahawks game.
Wide receiver. Once again, our starters are Greg Jennings and Chad Ochocinco. Chad and the Cincinnati Bengals face the reeling Cleveland Browns, while Greg gives us the potential to make a Monday night comeback. If either option isn't an option for you, Mr. Houshmandzadeh is available.
