Fearless Football Predictions - Week 5

As another football Saturday begins, it's time to grab your favorite breakfast meat and enjoy another round of fantasy football predictions for the People's League. These targets have earned an extra hit of syrup by going 4-1 last week, raising our season record to 13-7.

People's Pigskin vs. Fighting Amish. Yes, Knowshon Moreno's lingering injury is a cause for concern, but both Peyton Manning and Antonio Gates should give the Pigskin another reason to celebrate.

cowboys romero vs. Chicago VinSethBears. The Cowboys cracked the 100-point barrier for the first time last week. The VinSethBears have yet to do that this season, and they have Tom Brady going on his bye week. The Cowboys should have just enough to pull off the win.

Feely Her Up ... vs. Team z. This one should be close. The Zs better hope Randy Moss gels quickly with his new quarterback. The prediction here is for Mr. Straight Cash Homey to get just enough Monday night points to lead the Zs to a victory.

t-bay cuervonatersXXL vs. Hudson Valley Hawks. Yo, Adrian. Both the Minnesota Vikings and the Hawks will need you to come through this week. He should make the difference between a win and a loss for the Hawks.

NFL2K10 RedZone vs. nuckin' futs. This week, it's going to be Drew Brees' world, and the rest of us will simply be living in it. That includes the futs, who will ride his coattails to victory.

Don't forget to vote on our lineup polls, which will close Sunday morning. We'll be back with the NASCAR predictions.

The People's Choice - Fontana

Once again, we owe you, the Internet, a debt of gratitude. You came out to vote on the People's Pitstop lineup for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Fontana. Here are the results.

A List. A great run will come to an end as Jimmie Johnson takes the starting spot for the final time this season. Jeff Gordon will watch this one from the bench.

B List. One of the starting spots is settled. It will go to this week's poll winner, Ryan Newman. The other spot will come down to qualifying results and will go to either Kasey Kahne or Joey Logano. Meanwhile, one bench spot goes to Jamie McMurray.

C List. Another clear winner, and another driver appearing for the last time in the starting lineup: A.J. Allmendinger. As you can see below, he ran away with this poll. Paul Menard, one of the many drivers tied for second, will get the bench spot.

This post will be updated as soon as possible after Friday's qualifying session. In the meantime, don't forget to vote on the football polls. We'll be back with some predictions.

UPDATED 9:15 P.M. By qualifying 5th, Kahne earned the starting spot over Logano, who qualified 10th. And even though he won't start for us, McMurray will contribute to our bottom line by earning the pole and giving us a 10-point bonus.

An Angel Gets Its 6 Points

One of the best lessons that fantasy football can teach is how, as Clarence Oddbody, AS2, said in "It's a Wonderful Life," each man's life touches so many others, and if he isn't there, it leaves an awful hole.

Football players can leave that hole by finagling a mid-season trade, as Randy Moss did this week. In fantasy terms, the trade should be good news for Brett Favre, who now has a wide receiver without a bum hip, a history of migraines or a reality TV wife. It may be bad news for Tom Brady, who can't throw deep passes to the draft pick his team received in exchange for Moss. And it may be horrible news for Wes Welker, who was able to catch so many balls over the past few years in part because his teammate was the one drawing all the attention from "shutdown corners."

Another way a football player can leave a hole is by refusing to show up for games or practices, as Vincent Jackson has been doing for months. In this case, the only hole being generated so far is in Jackson's wallet. Antonio Gates certainly isn't missing Jackson. Neither is Philip Rivers. In fact, Legedu Naanee might want to send Jackson a basket of fruit.

Sometimes, you don't have control over when you leave a hole on your team. For example, you can be sacked 9 times in a half because your offensive coordinator has decided that the words "blocking" and "tight end" don't belong in the same paragraph. In fact, you can get concussed so badly that your team has to rule you out for the following week's game. Though it's not fair to call this Jay Cutler's "fault," it's true nevertheless that his absence will hurt every other offensive player wearing a Chicago Bears helmet.

And sometimes, you leave a hole on your team by performing as if your football had a hole in it. That's what Derek Anderson has done so far with the Arizona Cardinals. His loss (and Arizona's losses) may prove to be Max Hall's gain. It may even benefit Larry Fitzgerald (remember him?), but it will definitely be a blessing for Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower, at least in the short term. After all, if Ken Whisenhunt wants to keep Hall upright, he'll call plenty of handoffs and screens until the quarterback gets his feet wet.

Hear that bell ringing? No, it's not you getting your wings. It's a reminder to vote in our polls. The NASCAR polls will close tonight. We'll be back with the results.

The People's Facts - Pepsi Max 400

First, a quick football update. You, the Internet, decided to claim Matt Bryant off waivers to fill the kicker spot in the People's Pigskin roster. He's ready to face the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, and the Pigskin is that much closer to being ready to play the Fighting Amish. But we still need your help (and your votes) to determine the rest of our lineup.

We also need your help picking the People's Pitstop lineup for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race. Here is some information that may or may not help you make your selections.

Track basics: Auto Club Speedway, a 2-mile oval in Fontana, California, is the second-longest track currently used in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. (Only Talladega is longer.)

Last time we were here: In Feburary, a week after the Daytona 500, Jimmie Johnson found Victory Lane for the first time this season. The People's Pitstop left him on the bench and suffered the consequences. The team picked up only 217 points, one of the worst results of the season.

Other recent winners: Insert your favorite conspiracy theory here, but Johnson has won three straight fall races at Fontana. The last driver other than Johnson to win a fall race here was Kasey Kahne in 2006.

Who wins here a lot: Take a wild guess who leads active NASCAR drivers with 5 victories on this track. Here's a hint: His co-owner (along with Matt Kenseth) are runners-up with 3 wins apiece.

Why are we here again? It's not because of history; Fontana has only been hosting NASCAR races since 1997. And it's certainly not because this track is terribly popular with racing fans. Furthermore, it's not because the races are guaranteed sellouts. Here's one possibility. Take a look at this list of NASCAR drivers. Quite a few of them would consider Fontana their "home track," including Johnson and Kevin Harvick. Maybe Delanna has even more pull than we all thought.

Want to know more about this race? Click here to download a Yahoo Sports preview. But only after you've voted in our polls. Thanks.

A Sigh of Relief

Whew ... that was a close shave.

The People's Pigskin survived a Monday night charge by t-bay cuervonatersXXL and won by a score of 110-107. That puts your favorite fantasy football team at the top of the People's League with a record of 4-0. And we couldn't have done it without you. Here's the scoring breakdown.

Peyton Manning, QB: 33 for 46 passing for 352 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception, 1 rush for minus-1 yards and 20 fantasy points. Manning won't be happy with his team's last-second loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but fantasy players will be happy if it means he's still playing when the fantasy playoffs come around.

Michael Turner, RB: 16 rushes for 50 yards, 3 receptions for 28 yards and 7 fantasy points. Obviously, the rushing numbers were not very good, but it would be good news if Turner is being used as a safety valve on passing plays.

Darren McFadden, RB: 12 rushes for 47 yards, 6 receptions for 82 yards and 12 fantasy points. The big story here is the hamstring injury McFadden suffered against the Houston Texans. Early reports indicate the injury is not serious, but it will warrant monitoring throughout the week.

Calvin Johnson, WR: 6 receptions for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns, 1 rush for 2 yards and 20 fantasy points. It's always a good sign when sports writers are advising NFL teams to keep calling your player's number.

Chad Ochocinco, WR: 3 receptions, 59 yards and 5 fantasy points. On the other hand, it's not such a good sign when your player lines up across the field from someone having an epic fantasy day.

Justin Forsett, Flex: 19 rushes for 65 yards, 2 receptions for 10 yards and 7 fantasy points. Forsett's situation changed dramatically Tuesday when the Seattle Seahawks traded for Marshawn Lynch. How dramatically it changed remains to be seen.

Antonio Gates, TE: 7 receptions, 144 yards, 2 touchdowns and 26 fantasy points. As far as the People's Pigskin is concerned, Vincent Jackson can just go ahead and take the season off. The San Diego Chargers clearly did not miss him Sunday.

Tennessee Titans, D/ST: 1 interception, 6 sacks, 1 kickoff returned for a touchdown, 26 points allowed and 13 fantasy points. Their opponents called them dirty, and their top draft pick was lost for the season, but the Titans defense did its job, at least for fantasy players, unlike ...

Jeff Reed, K: 0 for 2 on field goals, 2 for 2 on extra points and 0 fantasy points. The Cuervonaters started an inactive kicker, and the Pigskin might as well have done the same. Reed has a bye week, and it's safe to say he won't be missed around here.

Bench. It was a decent week to be a backup Pigskin quarterback. Chad Henne scored 14 points, while Vince Young scored 11. Kenny Britt scored 8, and Kevin Smith scored 3.

This week, the People's Pigskin will face the 3-1 Fighting Amish, and we need a new lineup. The polls are now open. The kicker poll will close Tuesday night, so we can make a waiver wire request. The other football polls (located below the NASCAR ones) will close Sunday morning. You know what to do.

We'll be back with a look at this week's NASCAR track.

Monday's Racing Summary

Before we get to the auto racing, here's a quick update on the People's Pigskin. The Internet's favorite fantasy football team currently leads t-bay cuervonatersXXL by a score of 110-97. That lead might not get us through the night, however. The Cuervonaters have Ronnie Brown and Anthony Fasano playing in the Monday night game between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots. The Pigskin will need them to have a night like Jay Cutler had Sunday night (without the concussion part, of course).

As for the People's Pitstop, your favorite fantasy NASCAR team scored 261 points during Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. The season total is 7,740, leaving us 59,524th overall on Yahoo Sports and dropping us one spot, to 75th, in the Fans of From the Marbles league.

Here's how we got here.

Jimmie Johnson: Started 21st, finished 2nd and 88 fantasy points. Fantasy NASCAR players will be disappointed that Johnson did not lead a lap, but since Johnson moved into the points lead, it's a safe bet that he'll get over it.

Jeff Burton: Started 23rd, finished 18th, 2 laps led and 66 fantasy points, including 10 for leading a lap. This was Burton's last race for the People's Pitstop this season. From a fantasy perspective, it can be described the same way as his season: OK but nothing to write home about. Yes, he's one of the drivers who made the Chase, but he did not win a race, and he has to be considered a long shot to get a checkered flag, much less the Sprint Cup.

Ryan Newman: Started 6th, finished 9th and 74 fantasy points. Here's a very interesting chart of Newman's day. It shows that even though he spent a good portion of the day near the front of the pack, he never found a way to get to the front of the pack.

Sam Hornish Jr.: Started 18th, finished 36th and 20 fantasy points. To the growing list of words and phrases you never want to hear associated with your driver's performance, add the phrase "drive shaft."

And don't forget the 10 points we got from Kasey Kahne for taking the pole and the 3 points we got from Jeff Gordon for qualifying 3rd. Without their contributions, our performance would look a lot worse.

Now, NASCAR takes its act to California (Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, to be specific), and the People's Pitstop needs another lineup. The polls are now open and will stay open until Thursday night.

Also, for you fantasy football fans, we have a poll that asks which kicker should get Jeff Reed's spot in our lineup. That poll will close Tuesday night, so we can put in the waiver request before the Wednesday morning deadline. Please vote now.

We'll be back with a summary of our football team's performance.

The People's Choice - Week 4

We've made it to another Sunday, and once again, it's time for us to thank you, the Internet, for selecting the People's Pigskin lineup for this week's People's League matchup against t-bay cuervonatersXXL. Here are the results.

Quarterback. Raise your hand if you're surprised Peyton Manning was the unanimous choice this week. OK, put your hand down, Jon Lovitz. Manning gets the Jacksonville Jaguars today.

Running back. Knowshon Moreno's injury may have made this poll easier. We have a tie at the top: Michael Turner (playing the San Francisco 49ers) and Darren McFadden (playing the Houston Texans). They get the starting spots.

Wide receiver. Calvin Johnson wins this poll and gets to face the Green Bay Packers this afternoon. The runner-up was Chad Ochocinco, who need to forget about his cereal long enough to play the Cleveland Browns.

As for the flex spot, Justin Forsett got more votes than Kenny Britt, so Forsett plays for the Internet's favorite fantasy football team this week. He gets the St. Louis Rams.

There were no changes at tight end (Antonio Gates, who plays the Arizona Cardinals) or kicker (Jeff Reed, who plays the Baltimore Ravens). As we discussed earlier in the week, you chose to replace our previous defense with the Tennessee Titans. They face the Denver Broncos this afternoon.

Again, thanks for voting. A new poll dealing with the issue of bye weeks is available now. The results of the football polls appear below. Enjoy the games, everybody!

Fearless NASCAR Predictions - Kansas

Now that you've had a chance to digest our fantasy football predictions for this week, it's time to offer a look at which NASCAR drivers will finish in the top 10 at Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. Last week's forecasts went 5-5, leaving us with a season record of 129-141.

1. Jimmie Johnson. Until further notice.

2. Joey Logano. He must be comfortable with this track, having won the Nationwide race on Saturday.

3. Denny Hamlin. He survived last week's hoopla and remains at the top of the Chase points list.

4 and 5. Kurt and Kyle Busch. Of course, if someone does take a shot at Hamlin, the Busch brothers will be in position to challenge Johnson for the title. And both of them have the teams that can get it done.

6. Kasey Kahne. This driver may not be in the Chase, but he does have the pole.

7. Tony Stewart. Simply because the term "defending race champion" has to mean something.

8. Ryan Newman. Stewart's teammate has quietly finished in the top 10 in four of the last five races.

9. Jeff Gordon. Among this year's Chase drivers, Gordon has the best average finish at Kansas (8.9).

10. Paul Menard. This week's medium to long shot made things easy for us by qualifying on the front row along with Hamlin.

We're still taking votes on the lineup for the People's Pigskin for this week's matchup against t-bay cuervonatersXXL. Please remember to vote. We'll be back with the poll results.

Fearless Football Predictions - Week 4

It's Saturday morning, so it's time to grab a coffee (or another beverage; we at the People's Pigskin are not here to judge) and peruse this week's predictions for the People's League. For the second consecutive week, the picks went 2-3, leaving us with a season record of 9-6.

People's Pigskin vs. t-day cuervonatersXXL. The Internet's favorite fantasy football team has only one player on a bye week (Dwayne Bowe) and only one injured player (Knowshon Moreno, who has been ruled out again). Our opponent has three injured players and six players with bye weeks. The numbers add up to another victory for the Pigskin.

Team z vs. Fighting Amish. Both rosters feature running backs with injury concerns. The Amish have Michael Vick, who seems to be unstoppable right now and has already locked up Comeback Player of the Decade honors. His numbers against the Washington Redskins should be enough to buggy whip the Amish to a third win.

Hudson Valley Hawks vs. Chicago VinSethBears. At least one of these 0-3 teams will get its first non-loss of the season. (Yes, they could tie, and that would mean the first non-loss for both teams.) The VinSethBears have not one, but two high-quality receivers listed as questionable. That may be one question mark too many. The Hawks taste victory for the first time this week.

nuckin' futs vs. cowboys romero. My heart would like to say that the Cowboys get off the mat this week. But my head sees big days for both Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald. The head wins, and so do the Futs.

NFL2K10 RedZone vs. Feely Her Up ... This one should come down to the wire on Monday night. The RedZones have two Patriots players facing a Miami defense that just made Braylon "Don't Drop Your Drink" Edwards look like an All-Pro. Those two players should help the RedZones erase a Feely lead and give them the victory.

Remember to vote on the lineup polls. They will close Sunday morning. We'll be back later with the NASCAR predictions.

The People's Choice - Kansas

Whether your weather right now is bone dry or not so dry, you, the Internet, braved the virtual elements to select the lineup for the People's Pitstop to field at Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. Here are your selections.

A List. He's got four titles and a hot hand, so it should come as no surprise that you picked Jimmie Johnson to start this week. His co-owner Jeff Gordon will watch from the bench.

B List. This week, the People's Pitstop will say farewell to another driver, because Jeff Burton has been selected to start his final race for us this season. Ryan Newman will join him in the starting lineup, while Jamie McMurray and Kasey Kahne will grab the bench spots.

C List. This is the only poll that produced a tie. A.J. Allmendinger and Sam Hornish Jr. will compete in the qualifying session for the fourth and final starting spot.

We will update this post after the qualifying session. Please be sure to vote in the fantasy football polls, which will close Sunday morning. We'll be back with the predictions.

EDITED 6:45 P.M. This has to be a first. Our team is getting 13 points from two drivers who won't even start for us: Gordon (3 points for qualifying 3rd) and Kasey Kahne (10 points for getting the pole). Hornish qualified 18th and beat out Allmendinger, who qualified 30th, for the C List spot.
